Skin Medicine

We at NYOC prefer using oils that are indigenous to our region and from sellers we trust. Our
skincare philosophy is that if you cannot ingest it, don’t put it on your skin and to rather use food to
heal the body inside and out.

Our Ingredients
We use four key ingredients for our Balms - Beeswax, Propolis, Baobab and Marula oil. All of these
ingredients are natural which is beneficial especially for sensitive skin, which can become irritated
from synthetic ingredients. We also use fragrant essential oils; our favourites being Lavender, Sweet
Orange, African Sage and Lemongrass, each with their own aromatherapeutic properties.

Propolis
Propolis, or bee glue, is a sticky resin-like product made by bees. Its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial
properties aid in cell regeneration and accelerating healing time. We harvest propolis from our hives
and soak it in cold pressed olive oil for at least 2-3 months to extract its healing compounds.
Baobab seed oil is a regenerative oil known to restore collagen and gives skin a waterproofing
barrier. It is known to reduce inflammation and contains omega fatty acids used to treat conditions
such as psoriasis and moisturising vitamins A, D, E and F.

Beeswax
Beeswax has both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and has long been used to treat
burns and heal wounds. Beeswax is a natural humectant so holds moisture, attracts water and keeps
skin hydrated. It is known to soothe skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.
Marula oil is another nut oil and is also high in antioxidants, amino and essential fatty acids which
help to hydrate skin. It absorbs easily into the skin, without leaving a greasy residue.

What are antioxidants?
Compounds that can either slow down or prevent damage to cells
What is anti-inflammatory?
It is a property that reduces or prevents inflammation or swelling. Inflammation is the bodies way of
protecting us and is essentially the bodies response to an injury or infection.
